Lens manufacturers first learned to mass produce soft contact lenses using hydrogel, an easily moldable material that allowed instant comfort on lens insertion as compared to rigid lenses. As companies developed their own hydrogel materials, the FDA developed classifications (I, II, III, IV) based on their ionic values and water content.
