Mile Brujic, OD, and David Kading, OD, discuss punctual occlusion and when to use it. With the ever-increasing options for treating dry eye disease, it can be more difficult than ever for physicians to determine when to employ punctual plugs. Drs. Brujic and Kading state that their strategy is to reduce inflammation before performing punctual occlusion to manage dry eyes. The availability of the point-of-care test InflammaDry (RPS), which measures the levels of the inflammatory marker MMP-9, allows physicians to assess the severity of and then monitor inflammation. This approach enables a more guided therapeutic plan.
